All you need is….good credit?
Oh my god. How could I not know that the cover of “All You Need is Love” on the Chase bank commercials is performed by Nada Surf? How could I not recognize probably my favorite band in the whole world?
On the one hand, it sounds amazing, almost as good as the original. On the other hand, they made a song for a fucking credit card company! And the ad is basically saying you can use your credit card to buy love! I don’t know how I feel about them contributing to this. Not like I a, going to stop buying their albums or anything.
You’re right in your alarm about this sellout move. Your conscience is likely trying to tell you something. To defame the legacy of The Beatles by performing this worldwide anthem of love and peace for a fucking credit card commercial is a disgusting move of a band with a great lack of integrity.
It should be noted that another band, The Features (terrific group), were approached by their label, Universal, about doing this cover for the commercial and rejected it on the same grounds that you and I are complaining now. As a penalty for daring to put their foot down in the name of integrity over greed and corporate advertising, they were released from their contract with the company (Universal), who then approached Nada Surf with the idea. Nada, obviously more about money and buckling to corporate pressure than music and dignity, played the role of the little monkey and did as they were told. I guess it goes to reaffirm the idea that there’s always someone that will do the dirty work. And this was plenty dirty.
Nada Surf should be ashamed of themselves. It is my hope that they will continue to slide downhill and, eventually, into oblivion. And shame on Chase and Universal for giving less than a shit about a great band’s legacy.
